There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come…

And we are proud to say that through public support and advocacy efforts, the time for free birth control has finally come for Canada through Pharmacare!

Almost 13,000 Canadians spoke up for free birth control through our petition, and we took their voices to Ottawa.

The result?

A federal commitment to implement free birth control for all in Canada through pharmacare!

Alongside our partners from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, Action Canada, The University of British Columbia, and the Native Womens Association, we presented our proposed policy and public support to key federal ministries, including the Prime Minister’s Office

Why a federal policy?

  • A federal policy for free prescription birth control does not cost money, it creates money!! Studies have shown for each $1 invested in universal contraception, results in up to 9 times total cost savings across the public sector. Cost benefits are realized quickly, with cost neutrality at year two and significant net savings by year three.

  • Reproductive Rights are Human Rights and cannot be left to the whim of changing provincial governments. Reproductive Rights are currently being threatened in the United States and elsewhere in the world. British Columbia offers universal coverage of contraception, while other provinces have programs that are patchy or difficult to access.  There exists an equity issue within Canada in accessing contraception. Now is the time for the Government of Canada to affirm its commitment to reproductive rights and ensure secure and equitable access to birth control for all Canadians

  • Canada is the only country worldwide with universal healthcare that lacks coverage for prescription drugs. The Government of Canada has committed to the implementation of a national pharmacare program.  A Federal Policy for the Universal Coverage of Contraception in Canada could be an important, immediate and symbolic first step in the implementation this program

A policy Canadians

Want…

A recent poll has shown that 83% of Canadians approve of a federal policy for free birth control, and 7 in 10 believe the matter is urgent.

Next Steps

Our work isn’t done yet…

Although birth control will be free in Canada through pharmacare, certain provinces like Alberta have decided to opt-out of pharmacare.

We are working to encourage the Albertan government to reconsider this position and we need your help!
